Week 1 of the June 2026 Matched Giving, and a small progress update.

Thank you very much for those who supported the effective charities doing work to help those in extreme poverty. I just wanted to give a quick progress update to show the impact that we are managing to have.

If you have not yet donated to the matched giving but would like to, please have a look at my original blog post here.

How much have we raised?

Together we have managed to raise just over $900 NZD in just a week!

How much good can it do?

Converting the amount raised into USD and using the The Life You Can Save’s Impact Calculator, we can work out how much good we are doing together.

update_2

By pooling small to medium donations from a few friends, we have managed to protect 275 children from the harmful causes of vitiman A deficieny. I think that’s pretty amazing!

If we get to the final target of $8000 NZD of giving by the end of June, it will be enough to save a life. Think about how impactful that is(!!)

Note, I’ve made some assumptions that everyone who donated did so by donating to Effective Altruism NZ’s Maximum Impact fund. I then took a look at their granting history to see Hellen Keller Intl received their latest grant.

Extra credit work…

And finally, someone who can explain the arguments for why we ought to give to those in extreme poverty much better than I, Peter Singer.

Peter Singer’s TED talk on effective altruism.
